Cantor Awarded the 2010 Weinstock Award by the Brain Injury Association of Virginia

Breit Cantor Grana Buckner

On March 27, 2010, Irv Cantor was awarded the 2010 Weinstock Award by the Brain Injury Association of Virginia at its Annual Conference. The Weinstock Award is awarded annually to honor individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to advocacy and support of people with brain injury.

The Weinstock Award was established in 2006 by the Brain Injury Association of Virginia (BIAV) in honor of Harry Weinstock who served sixteen years with BIAV, fifteen of them as executive director. Harry demonstrated a passionate dedication to helping survivors and their families in their journey through life after a brain injury.

Nominees for this award are citizens of the commonwealth who have made unique and lasting contributions. Individuals or groups are nominated and then voted on by a committee of the board of directors. Previous recipients of the award include Harry Weinstock, Dr. Nathan Zasler, and Theresa Ashberry.

This year’s recipient, Irv Cantor, was nominated by multiple parties. The following quotes come from his nominators.

“He is responsible for developing our golf tournament, which is not only a fundraiser but also an excellent medium to get our message to the broader community.”

“He “walked the talk” and established a source of unencumbered funds to give BIAV a mechanism for paying for things that are not covered by grants and contracts, such as paying off debt and building a reserve fund.”

“He has always provided a quiet leadership and works diligently behind the scenes for brain injured individuals, their families. He believes in the mission of the Brain Injury Association of Virginia.”

“Throughout his tenure as president and beyond, he generously provided his conference room for BIAV meetings and went above and beyond being a good host. We are lucky to have him as a major leader for the cause of brain injury.”

“He led BIAV through the process of bringing on a new executive director. He provided strong guidance and steady leadership through a period of great transition and BIAV has benefited from his vision for the future of the organization.”

“He has been, and remains, a tremendous supporter for BIAV. He believed in us, helped us problem solve, prodded us when we needed it, and was always available to answer questions or serve as a sounding board. He genuinely respects the staff and we deeply admire his dedication and exemplary service to BIAV.”

Thank you, Irv for all that you have done for BIAV and the brain injury community!
